Alligator Sighting at Kensington Metropark

Alligator Sighting at Kensington Metropark : Alert

MILFORD TOWNSHIP, MI – Visitors and residents near Kensington Metropark are being alerted about a possible alligator sighting at Kent Lake. Signs posted around the lake warn people not to approach the reptile if they see it and to contact Metroparks Police immediately at 1-810-227-8910.

It’s unclear how the alligator got to the park, but officials suspect it might have been a released pet. The alligator was first reported on Thursday, leading to concerns about the presence of this non-native animal.

Authorities, including the Oakland County Sheriff Department, Oakland County Animal Control, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and Detroit Zoological Society, conducted an extensive search early Friday morning using drones, ATVs, boats, and a helicopter. Despite their efforts, they did not find the alligator.

There has only been one reported sighting of the alligator so far. Officials will keep the warning signs up and continue monitoring the lake for any further signs of the animal.

According to Fox2 report, Danielle Mauter spokesperson said that “We will keep watching for any more sightings of the possible alligator and leave the warning signs in place to help the public report any future encounters,”. She noted that the alligator was seen in a part of the lake not commonly used for swimming or boating.

The park will remain open. Mauter emphasized that if the sighting is genuine, it’s likely due to someone releasing a pet alligator into the lake. “Alligators are not native to Michigan. If this sighting is real, it’s most likely someone released a pet alligator. We urge visitors to be cautious and not to approach the animal if seen. Instead, call the Metroparks Police immediately at the number on the signs,” she said.

If you see the alligator, please call 810-227-8910.
